BATU HADDANBatu Haddan is a new character to emerge in The Avignon Quorum. Born in Beirut the only son of Maronite Christian refugees, Said and Françoise Haddan. In the early and mid 1970`s the Maronite refugees were concentrated into the rundown Achrafieh quarter of east Beirut. Life was tough and he had lost both parents by the age of twelve. Forced by circumstance to live with an alcoholic aunt the young Haddan spent most of his time out on the tough back streets. A life of crime followed and as he grew theft and petty crime was replaced with thuggish enforcement. Haddan`s sharp mind and knack for making money soon saw him rise through the ranks of the street gangs. The decisive point came with an agreement to smuggle drugs and weapons on behalf of Afghanistan’s Mujahideen. At the age of twenty-eight Haddan was running the largest smuggling operation in the eastern Mediterranean through a complex series of companies that he had strong-armed into his control. The once struggling legitimate companies began to flourish guided by his sharp business acumen and expanded west. The successful import and exports of spices, fruit, textiles and wines first went to Cyprus, then Turkey, Greece and Egypt. The illegal trade in drugs, guns and people followed. Rich and handsome he made generous donations to charitable foundations and was quickly accepted by polite society.
