Some books recommended by Sean with a brief review and in no particular order Behind God`s back: Harri Nykänen
I`ve read four or five books now since I updated this part of the site. All of them topped the numerous Best sellers Lists and none were particularly good. I won`t list them because I don`t think it would be in the true spirit of author to dismiss or denigrate another author`s work. So it was a nice surprise when I began to read this book by Nykänen . This is the first book by Nykänen that I`ve had the good fortune to read. and it certainly will not be the last. I absolutely love his main character Kafka and the way his heritage weighs upon him, continually forcing him to re-evaluate his life. All in all a great twist on the Nordic Noir. Police: Jo Nesbø I finally got round to Reading another of Jo`s Harry Hole books and as usual it didn`t let me down. Harry is still fighting his own demons while chasing down a violent serial killer with an appetite for killing police officers. Hopefully the new series Occupied, based on a concept by Jo and being put together by the team behind Wallander and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, will hit all of our screens sooner rather than later! Criminal Enterprise: Owen Laukkanen A startling journey of one mans descent from respectable professional to being on the FBI`s most wanted list. Carter Tomlin feeds off the adrenalin and quickly spirals out of control. A roller-coaster of a ride that draws you in. It`s definitely a book you won`t want to put down. The age of doubt: Andrea Camilleri I love the crazy insecure Inspector Montalbano and Camilleri takes it to the next level in this book. Montalbano is the vehicle that encapsulates all the male insecurities that have ever existed! Excellent read The Spanish game: Charles Cumming Great writing by Charles Cumming the plot build and builds with the main character ex-MI6 man Alec Milius becoming increasingly paranoid. Just a really good read. The sixth man: David Baldacci This book topped the Best Sellers list in 2013 for a reason - because its great. If you`ve not read it yet, do! The riddle of the sands: Erskine Childers I saw the 1970`s film with Michael York long before I ever read the book. I was astonished to discover that it was written long before the start of the First World War. When read in that context it makes the book eerily fascinating. A truly excellent read. The Excalibur codex: James Douglas One for the conspiracy theorist this. I`m always drawn to books and authors that try and mesh fiction with reality. This does it in spades! Kill me if you can: James Patterson This is one that I couldn`t put down, I think I read it in three or four days. Definitely worth buying. Worth dying for: Lee Child I like Jack Reacher books but I think I overdosed a little after this one. This was the first one I read and is still my favourite. The sacred blood: Michael Byrnes I really liked this one. Indiana Jones meets Stephen Hawking. But don`t let that worry you it doesn`t get too technical. Fast and exciting is the best way to describe it. An excellent thriller. Meltwater: Michael Ridpath I`d be hard pushed to think of a book that I`ve ever enjoyed more than this one. Nordic Noir at its best! The Geneva trap; Stella Rimington When the former head of an intelligence agency writes a thriller then you know that you have to TAKE NOTICE! The Professor of Truth: James Robertson I never thought that I would think of a "thriller" as moving, heartfelt or beautiful. I did after reading this. Copyright © Sean Buckley MMXXIII
